British barrister and one of the UK’s leading human rights campaigners, Baroness Shami Chakrabarti CBE was the keynote speaker at this year’s annual Head’s Lecture.

Addressing the school community, the former Director of advocacy organisation Liberty and recently appointed Labour Party shadow Attorney General, gave a lecture that reinforced her reputation as one of the country’s most prominent speakers in campaigning for civil liberties and human rights.

Baroness Chakrabarti said: “We all have multiple identities but ultimately we’re all human beings and have to stand together. Everyone is equal and no one is superior.

"We are living in a radical political time and need to unite across the democratic parties.”

Before the lecture, a small group of CHS’s politics students had the opportunity to ask the speaker questions in a personal Q&A session, during which she tackled subjects such as the refugee crisis, Fidel Castro, her views on Jeremy Corbyn and stance on social media.

“Social media is the single greatest technological revolution of my lifetime and brings enormous opportunities for communication across the world,” she said. “Yet there’s the other side of it and the way it’s used needs to be managed. Politics, ethics and the law need to catch up with technology,”

Baroness Chakrabarti is the latest guest to be invited to speak at CHS’s annual Head’s Lecture event.
