More than 150 students, from independent and state schools from across Kent and the South East, joined girls from Benenden for the event which was run in conjunction with the Wise Young Women’s Board and The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The day-long event opened with a talk from Patricia Mawuli, an aviation engineer and Ghana’s first female pilot. There were then a range of eminent speakers from institutions including the Medway School of Pharmacy, Shell Oil, Pfizer, Citrix, the University of Surrey and University College London.

There was also a question and answer section when participants got the chance to quiz the speakers on careers in Science and Engineering.

Headmistress Samantha Price said, “We were delighted to be able to host this conference, especially as it is in a field that is becoming increasingly important in today’s society. Studying for a degree in a STEM subject can help students access a huge range of careers, not just in science, technology and engineering, but also in those that are not directly related such as banking, business and law. It was wonderful to see so many young people here enjoying and engaging with the day and I hope many of them have gone away inspired by the countless opportunities available to them.”
