‘Boxhilda’ has officially joined CowParade Surrey, regarded as the world’s largest public art event. The cow’s design is the creation of Ellie Lewin, Sevanna Godiksen, Sophie Topple, Chloe Walker and Eirwen Mathias Landaluze, year eight pupils from Box Hill School.
CowParade is the world’s largest public art event which is seeing lots of brightly decorated fibreglass cows placed in popular landmarks across Surrey this summer. The idea is that each cow is ‘sponsored’ by a business, school or charity and decorated by a local artist.
The pupils worked in collaboration with Surrey artist/illustrator Louise Wishart, whose work includes commissions for The Dining Room restaurant and Maison Du Velo in Reigate. The pupils also worked with Anna Burgess, Head of Fashion & Textiles at Box Hill School.
The design reflects the 35 nationalities of pupils at the school and the first of six principles which are part of the schools’ Round Square Ideals – Internationalism. Round Square is an international group of schools sharing the philosophy of Dr Kurt Hahn – to place academic work at the heart of the school while stressing the importance of an all-round education as a preparation for life. Funds raised during the auction of Boxhilda will enable Box Hill pupils to participate in service projects worldwide.
Headmaster, Cory Lowde, comments: “We are delighted to be involved in the world’s largest public art event which has been staged in over 75 cities worldwide since 1999 as it closely aligns with our Internationalism ideal. Our pupils demonstrated real enthusiasm for this project and a number of very creative designs were put forward for consideration. The international flag theme was chosen as it reflects the nationalities of the pupils at the School and our membership of Round Square. Through this organisation we offer opportunities to attend international conferences and overseas service projects. Students help to build schools in Africa, water supplies in Thailand and medical centres in Costa Rica. We will be delighted to fund these opportunities through funds raised when Boxhilda is auctioned later this year.”
