Calder House, a small co-educational day school for children aged between five and 13, is a specialist school for children with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. Recently, Calder House announced that they had been awarded the TES Award for Special Needs Initiative of the Year at the Times Educational Supplement’s Independent School of the Year Awards 2016.

Calder House was presented with the award in recognition of its pioneering work in identifying the links between weak working memory and pupils’ difficulties in reading, creative writing and learning within a classroom environment and its success in helping pupils overcome these difficulties.

The judging panel, who presented the award at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel to Calder House, said that they were a, "superb example of setting the bar high for pupils”.

“I am absolutely delighted that the amazing work of our Director of Studies, Ian Perks, and our remarkable Subskills Team has been recognised in this way”, said Karen Parsons, Calder House’s Headteacher. “This award reflects his long-standing dedication and determination to ensure that no child is allowed to fail and the remarkable support for our pupils that our team of subskill specialists brings to every lesson, every day”.

This award comes after Ofsted rated Calder House as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas of the assessment criteria. It goes to show that sometimes the best things really do come in small packages!
