Parents and staff of Derby High School were recently invited to see students pick up prizes, certificates and awards for their efforts across all areas including academic, sporting, musical, creative and extra-curricular achievements.

Dr Richard Faleiro, Chairman of Governors, welcomed everyone and spoke about work starting on their new state-of-the-art infant school building.

He said: “There is now a large steel skeleton on site and this is an exciting project that’s taken almost two years to plan and execute.

“The building will provide valuable opportunities for the girls to learn about the construction industry.”

Dr Faleiro also spoke about this year’s A-level and GCSE results: “With students taking up prestigious apprenticeships alongside places at a wide variety of universities, including the most highly competitive institutions, we are extremely proud of our young leaders of the future.”

Head teacher Denise Gould gave a speech, during which she spoke about the highlights of the past academic year.

She said: “I would like to give a very warm welcome to our speech day which is one of the most important occasions in the school year. The parents and students who are joining us for the first time will see the importance we place on celebrating all of our achievements and not just the academic ones.”

Mrs Gould spoke about the school’s outstanding exam results this year and the exceptional dedication of the teachers and support staff: “At Derby High we have an exceptionally dedicated team of teachers and support staff with outstanding subject knowledge and genuine enthusiasm for developing young people, who have inspired our students to succeed at these critical stages.”

Guest of honour Claire Young, a finalist in TV show The Apprentice, talked about her career and offered the girls some inspirational advice.

She said: “My school taught me lots of things and one of those was to have the confidence to speak up and we were always encouraged to be assertive, do our best and be our best.”
