Diggers move in on Derby site

Construction work has started on a new two-storey building for nursery and infant pupils at Derby High School

The new building at Derby High School is set to cater for primary pupils from pre-school to year two and will have two storeys with eight classrooms, a hall and additional outside learning space. The school in Hillsway, Littleover is working closely with architects Pick Everard and builders Bowmer and Kirkland.

Head of primary Michelle Hannaford said: “Today was really exciting as after months of planning and designing, our new nursery and infant facility is now becoming a reality. We are looking forward to watching the building appear before us. We hope to have eight new classrooms and a hall ready for use in early 2016.”

Denise Gould, headteacher at Derby High, said: “We are delighted to see the building work starting in earnest now. The children will have great opportunities to learn more about construction and are clearly excited at the presence of the diggers in action.”

John Kirkland, chairman of Bowmer and Kirkland, said: “I am really pleased that we are building the new infant and nursery facility for Derby High School. Our design manager Graham Lee was involved in the extension of the original Southlands House – which we are replacing – when he was a Derby-based architect 35 years ago, so there is a real sense of continuity for us.”
