CILIP has produced ten fact sheets to guide students through the basics of undertaking research projects

The Information Literacy Group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), in support of the TeenTech Awards initiative, have produced ten concise and engaging information sheets designed to guide school students through the basics of undertaking research projects.

The TeenTech Awards are an annual competition to reward innovation and creative thinking among 11 to 18 year old students.

The colourful flyers are free to use and encourage young people to think about important questions such as how to conduct research, how to search for and locate information, how to evaluate information once it has been discovered; and protecting intellectual property.

The leaflets are designed to provide helpful tips and guidelines for young people working on school projects. They are valuable for anyone interested in fostering research methodologies and innovative, analytical thinking among young people.

The flyers cover the following topics:

  • Why do I need to collect my own research?
  • How to protect your ideas
  • Evaluating the information that you find
  • Search strategy: making the most out of a Google search
  • Linking projects to what customers actually want and need
  • Research is a messy process
  • How to write an effective questionnaire
  • Referencing research – creating citations and bibliography
  • What search engines are out there?
  • Your aim – thinking around your topic

The ten flyers have been produced under a Creative Commons license, which means that they are available to all schools to download and to use with their pupils to help support the delivery of any topic or activity that requires research and information literacy skills.
