Independent school pupils shine on A-level results day 2017

Independent schools across the UK celebrate as their pupils achieve exceptional A-level results

It’s been another successful year for independent schools as they have announced this year’s fantastic A-Level results. Although this cohort of pupils experienced a rocky period due to juggling the old and new A-Levels, pupils took this in their stride and during this testing time worked hard to achieve their potential.

Here is a round-up of some of the results that were revealed this morning:

Howell’s School, Llandaff

Of the students sitting A-levels at Howell's School, Llandaff this summer, 21% of all results were the highest A* grade, with 70% receiving A*-B grades. In addition, 86% of students who studied for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) gained A*-A grades. 

Principal, Sally Davis, said: "This year group were caught midway between the old and new specifications at A level, but I am delighted with their response to this new system and can only applaud an amazing team of staff and send my most heartfelt congratulations to this cohort of 2017."

Mount House School

Mount House School’s A-level results have once again improved this year, as their A*-A now stands at 40% and A*-B at 57%.

Headmaster, Matthew Burke, said, “With our value added scores again placing us in the top 5% of all schools nationally I am incredibly proud of the results achieved by all our students. Our school is not academically selective and yet for the past four years we have seen our results improve.”

Loretto School

Pupils at Loretto School are celebrating their success as the school has, once again, achieved an exceptionally good set of A-level results.  

This year, 66.8 % of all results were A*, A or B grades, an increase of 7.7% from last year, whilst 7% of pupils achieved at least 3 A* grades.  Results were excellent across all subjects, with particularly outstanding results achieved in Chemistry, Economics, French, Maths, Physics and Spanish. All three of the pupils with offers to Oxbridge secured their grades. There were most encouraging results from Loretto’s first year of EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) results with 70% of pupils scoring A* - C grades.

Headmaster, Dr Graham Hawley said, “This year’s pupils have done very well indeed, with the vast majority securing places at excellent universities. They should be proud of their achievements, which are the tangible result of their hard work and determination”.

Farlington School

After another successful year at Farlington School, Louise Higson, Farlington’s Headmistress, commented on the school’s A level results, “With a 100% pass rate, the hard work and commitment of the girls have been well rewarded; there is much cause for celebration.  University destinations include Bath, Reading, Surrey and The Royal Veterinary College, with girls studying courses ranging from English Literature to Veterinary Medicine.”

Our Lady of Sion School

Our Lady of Sion’s Year 13 students are celebrating record A level results with 93% being graded A*-C with 13% A* grades and 80% of grades A*-B. Over 60 % of students achieved 3 or more grades that were at least a B grade.

Dr Orchard, Headmaster, said, “Despite the move to linear A levels with new specifications and examinations, the students and staff have responded exceptionally well. I am delighted with the progress each of our students has made in their academic attainment and personal development.”

Lady Eleanor Holles School

LEH Is delighted to be celebrating another set of fabulous results as 93% of candidates got into their first choice university. A superb pass rate was achieved: 79% of all A levels taken gained an A* or A grade and 96% passed with grades A*- B.

Heather Hanbury, Headmistress, said: “We are very proud of our students’ achievements. The girls have worked extremely hard. I would like to offer them all my warmest congratulations and on their behalf thank their teachers for their contribution to making these results possible.”

Rydal Penrhos School

Sixth Form pupils at Rydal Penrhos are celebrating another year of fantastic A-level results. The school announced that it achieved a 93.9 per cent pass rate for the academic year, with A* and A the most frequently awarded marks once again.

A total of 34.3 per cent of total submissions received top grades, which combined with earlier International Baccalaureate Diploma results boosts the school's overall A*-A percentage at A-level or equivalent to nearly 40%.

In addition, 60.6% of entries achieving A*- B marks and 77.8% securing A*-C, which is up from the previous year.

Chemistry pupils at the school gained superb results, with 85.7 per cent achieving A*-B grades, with Drama and Theatre Studies candidates also excelling with 100% A*-B and English Literature pupils gaining 100 per cent A*-C.

Headmaster Simon Smith, said: “We are all delighted with these results. The pupils are to be, rightly, congratulated for their hard work and dedication to their academic studies whilst contributing in so many ways to the co-curricular life of this outstanding school.”

Dame Allan’s Schools

Students at Dame Allan’s Schools have been commended following another excellent batch of exam results.  Each year there are brilliant success stories for students and Dame Allan’s are thrilled at the fantastic results they have achieved for themselves as individuals and for the schools as a whole.

Students have gained places on a variety of university courses across the country. These courses vary from Medicine at UCL, Economics at Bath and Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering at Leeds.

Dr Hind, Principal at Dame Allan’s Schools said, “The ethos of Dame Allan’s Schools is to educate the whole child and support our students in being the very best they can be. These A Level results are testament to this and we are delighted to be celebrating the success of our students again this year.”

Stamford Endowed Schools

Overall the 199 students at Stamford Endowed Schools gained grades of A*, A, B or C in 83% of their examinations with 32% of the entries being graded at A* or A. Of the 614 A-level examinations taken, 198 resulted in either A* or A grades.  27 students gained at least three A grades.

Will Phelan, Principal of the Stamford Endowed Schools, said, “This year’s excellent examination results are the culmination of many years of work by our students and their teachers, supported by their families.  There have been many superb results and in that I count those students who have worked hard to achieve grades above their predictions. Many congratulations to all.” 

Maynard School

With a remarkable 64% of students attaining A*-A grades and 83% gaining A*-B in the new format A-levels 2017, The Maynard School in Exeter has certainly proven itself as one of the leading girls’ schools in the entire country.

“I am one very proud and happy headmistress,” said Sarah Dunn. “After two years of exceptional hard work, I am thrilled for all of our students to have gained such amazing results.”

“Over a third of our students achieved straight A*s and As which is an incredible achievement,” added Sarah.

Brentwood School

Once again, A Level students at Brentwood School are celebrating achieving an outstanding set of grades. Following on from the fantastic results achieved by this year’s cohort of International Baccalaureate students, their A Level counterparts have increased the number of top grades (A*-A) by an impressive 5% so that it now stands at 44%.

In total over three quarters of students applying got their first choice university, and 70% of students have places at a Russell Group university. Plus, five students are heading to Cambridge and one to Oxford.

Academic Deputy Head, Jeremy Quartermain, commented: “All of our talented students should be very proud of these terrific results. I’m particularly pleased that our A*-A grade average has increased so significantly. To be able to say that almost half of all A level (or IB equivalent) grades achieved by our students resulted in an A* or A grade is a fantastic achievement, and testament not only to their hard work but also to the tireless commitment put in by our wonderful teachers.”

Portland Place School

Students and staff at Portland Place School are jubilant following excellent A-Level results with an overall pass rate of 96%. The hard work and effort of this year’s cohort has seen a result of 20% A*- A and 54% of A*-Bs.

Headmaster at Portland Place School, David Bradbury, commented: “I am very pleased with these results and proud of our students. Though not as high as 2016 (a record year for Portland Place School), they continue an improving trend from 2014 and 2015. We are all so thrilled by these results. It gives us confidence in our method of teaching which is based around individual attention in a nurturing environment.”
