Malvern College opens fifth school overseas

Leading boarding school to open Malvern College Hong Kong in 2018

Malvern College has announced that it will be opening a fifth sister school overseas, in Hong Kong, for around 1,000 pupils aged from five to 18 years. Malvern College, which educates 650 girls and boys aged from 13 to 18, was established over 150 years ago and is set within a 250-acre campus at the foot of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire.

The new Hong Kong campus is Malvern College’s latest addition to its growing family of international schools and places Malvern at the forefront of a small but growing group of HMC schools operating overseas. Malvern College Hong Kong will be accepting applications from this coming September and will formally open in September 2018. Meanwhile in September 2017, a separate Malvern College Kindergarten for 200 children aged from two to five years will open in the West Kowloon area of Hong Kong. The school will comprise around 10 per cent local Hong Kong pupils, with others coming from the international expatriate community.

Earlier this year Carrie Lam, the Chief Secretary for Administration for the Hong Kong SAR Government, laid the foundation stone for Malvern College Hong Kong at a special ceremony, joined by the Headmaster of Malvern College UK, Antony Clark. Carrie Lam said: “The Hong Kong SAR Government is committed to developing a vibrant international school sector to underpin our position as Asia’s world city and international hub. Established in 1865, Malvern is renowned for being innovative and helping pupils to achieve their aspirations. I welcome Malvern to set foot in Hong Kong, and congratulate Malvern College Hong Kong on successfully taking forward this project.”

Antony Clark added: “Malvern College is a traditional school with a strong set of values, high academic expectations and a global outlook. We are delighted to be able to extend our family of schools to Hong Kong, building on our successful educational foundations and our partnerships in the region to establish schools which genuinely share our ethos and values. The whole Malvern College community benefits from these partnerships through staff and pupil engagement, while the broader Malvern community is able to further extend its network and worldview. At the same time, our international partnerships also generate additional funds which are invested into our world-class facilities at Malvern College UK”.

Malvern College Hong Kong is situated just 20 minutes from the central business district near the Hong Kong Science & Technology Park and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Facilities will include a concert-hall quality auditorium, a black-box studio theatre, an indoor six-lane 25 metre swimming pool, a vast sports hall and a floodlit all-weather sports pitch.

The school will offer a broad and balanced academic curriculum through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. The IB programme is respected worldwide for its genuine breadth and focus on the holistic development of internationally minded young people. The IB Diploma is a highly effective preparation for university and the world of employment. There will be a strong emphasis on STEM subjects and all pupils will learn Mandarin Chinese.

Malvern College Hong Kong will be Malvern College’s fifth international school. Malvern College Qingdao, which opened in 2012, is situated on a 50-acre campus in the north-eastern Chinese city of Qingdao, and is believed to be the first purpose-built international secondary school for Chinese nationals to be backed by a leading independent UK school and licensed by the Chinese authorities. Malvern’s second overseas school opened in Chengdu, south-western China, in September 2015, while a third school, located in the prosperous suburb of New Cairo in Egypt, opens in September 2016.

The Malvern College Hong Kong Kindergarten will open in September 2017, with Malvern College Hong Kong itself opening a year later. Malvern College Hong Kong will be the second British independent school to be established in Hong Kong, after Harrow International School Hong Kong which opened in September 2012.
