MHSG athlete is world's '€˜most valuable'

Ellie Edwards has won the Most Valuable Participant Female at the largest sporting event in the world, the Maccabiah Games in Israel

Ellie, who won Gold and two Bronzes for the British Athletics team in sprint events in July, was selected amongst athletes from 44 European countries to pick up the top award in a recent ceremony held in London.

Manchester High School for Girls student, Ellie, represented the UK at the games, winning Gold in the junior girls’ 200m race, and Bronze in the 100m and 4x100m relay. Ellie also achieved her personal best in the 100m with a stunning 12.68 seconds. Winning the coveted ‘most valuable’ award months after the games came as a huge surprise to the young athletics star.

Ellie said: “Last summer’s Maccabiah Games were the best experience of my life. I made my family, my school and my country proud by performing well in the games, and winning this award out of thousands of other athletes was just the icing on the cake. I can’t quite believe it!”

Ellie trains at the Trafford Athletics club and is currently studying for her A Levels at Manchester High. She picked up a fantastic set of GCSE results after the Maccabiah Games achieving 8 A*s and 2.5 As, mastering the balance between her sporting passion and aiming high with her studies.

Ellie is preparing for the schools’ athletics season to commence next spring, but her sights are set much higher. She said: “I’ve played sport throughout my time at MHSG and it gives me the discipline to do well in my studies. The PE Department here has been really supportive. Looking forward, sport is my passion so I want to compete professionally and aim for the Olympics.”
