Oakham School's new state-of-the-art Faculty of Social Sciences is now complete.
The three-storey building houses Oakham’s Economics, Business, Politics and International Relations and Citizenship departments. It includes some of the latest ideas and technologies for learning, including ‘brainstorming’ tables and walls which students are actively encouraged to write over. The Faculty also includes presentation rooms and ‘break-out zones,’ similar to the environments students will find themselves in when they move on to university and the world of work.
Oakham’s Director of Teaching and Learning, Jon Andrews, says that the physical environment has been designed to be flexible, to best suit the needs of the lesson. “We have spaces that cater for collaborative work, a Harkness-based approach, quiet reflection and effective discussion, which is of particular benefit to these subject areas,” she said.
The new building has been also designed to mirror the commercial world in its styling and décor – which should help to prepare students for their future business. Most notably, there is a large social space in the entrance to the building, with several Visual Display Units which will stream news channels to stimulate debate and discussion amongst the students.
I cannot imagine a more inspiring learning environment not only for current students to benefit from, but for generations of Oakhamians to come - Nigel Lashbrook, Headmaster
“These facilities really do befit the incredibly high levels of learning, discourse and debate that already take place in our Social Science departments. We have always had a strong international reputation for our political debating, along with high numbers of pupils going on to study Business and Economics at some of the best universities,” said Headmaster, Nigel Lashbrook. “I cannot imagine a more inspiring learning environment not only for current students to benefit from, but for generations of Oakhamians to come,” he added.
