Old Oakamians celebrate MBE and hockey success

Oakham School celebrate sporting successes of alumni Stuart Broad and Kathryn Lane

Posted by Hannah Vickers | March 16, 2017 | Sports & Leisure

There has been a lot to celebrate at Oakham School as two Old Oakhamians have experienced great success. Firstly, Stuart Broad has been awarded an MBE for his contribution to sport. He received his award from the Prince of Wales during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Stuart began his cricketing career aged 11 at Oakham, where he made a total of 50 appearances for the school’s 1st XI. He began to thrive at the game under the supervision of coaches Frank Hayes and David Steele, both ex-England players. Since leaving Oakham in 2014, Stuart’s career has gone from strength to strength – culminating in his well-deserved MBE. Last year he passed the landmark of 100 tests and was recognised as one of England’s leading wicket takers.

Secondly, Kathryn Lane who, after many years of playing for England U18s and U21s, has made her senior international debut for England Hockey. Kathryn won her first cap during the team’s 3-0 win over South Africa. Just last month, Kathryn was named part of the centrally contracted squad in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and this is the first match she’s played since training with the newly formed squad. During her time at Oakham Kathryn was selected to play for, and captain, England U18s. At the same time she was also playing for the school team, which successfully made it to the National Finals! After leaving Oakham in 2013 Kathryn progressed to playing for, and captaining, the GB U21 squad at the Junior World Cup last November, as well as playing club hockey.
