Dauntsey’s welcomes Jonathan Dimbleby
Broadcaster and author Jonathan Dimbleby has given the last of this year’s Mercers’ Lectures at Dauntsey’s school

For the last of this year’s Mercers’Lectures at Dauntsey’s School, Jonathan Dimbleby spoke about ‘World War Two in the Desert’. A number of sixth-form pupils also joined him for conversation and dinner at the headmaster’s house beforehand.
Dimbleby attracted the largest audience of the lecture series this year, as he took them through the events that unfolded during the battle of El Alamein in Egypt during World War Two.
Will Blakeney, a sixth-form pupil who attended the lecture said: “With wit, a wealth of knowledge and an ability to bring the subject to life, Jonathan provided a both fascinating and insightful account of World War Two that gripped and entertained the audience from the start. It proved to be a most memorable lecture that I'm sure those who attended won't forget.”
The Mercers’ Lecture series continues in spring 2015, with speakers including David Nussbaum, CEO of the World Wildlife Fund (12 Jan); explorer Benedict Allen (20 Jan); General Lord Richards, former chief of the defence staff (26 Feb); former politician Jonathan Aitken (5 Mar) and HSBC chairman Douglas Flint (12 Mar).
The lectures are named in recognition of the links between Dauntsey’s and the Mercers’ Company, which go back to Mercer founder alderman William Dauntsey, master of the Worshipful Company of Mercers, who founded the school in West Lavington in 1542.
