A sixth form fit for a king

The new facility at Kings Monkton School will accommodate growing pupil numbers and 17 new A-level subjects

Kings Monkton school in Cardiff has opened the doors of its brand-new, state-of-the-art sixth form facility, ahead of predicted growth in pupil numbers at the school, which has already been named as the fastest-growing independent school in the UK.

Management at the school are seeing pupil numbers increase following the announcement of the school’s pioneering new co-curriculum set to roll out in the school in September.

The new curriculum has been inspired by the world-renowned International Baccalaureate, and incorporates four distinct ‘learning pathways’ of natural sciences, business and law, education and humanities, and creative arts designed to thoroughly prepare students for a career in a chosen field.

Following the launch of its sixth form provision in 2014, Kings Monkton celebrated its first ever A-level results last summer, sweeping the board with subject areas English, Physics and Biology achieving a 100% pass rate of C or above, with 100% of pupils achieving a grade B or higher in Mathematics.

“Our sixth form has been going from strength to strength since its launch. The results we’ve seen so far have been truly outstanding and we are confident that we can attribute them to the commitment, enthusiasm and passion of our pupils and teachers alike,” said Abi Price, Head of Sixth Form at Kings Monkton. “This is a very exciting chapter in the continuing development of our offering for our sixth formers.”

Alongside the new curriculum structure, the school will extend its already impressive offering of A-levels to include 17 additional subjects. Students joining the new sixth form cohort in September will be able to choose from an extensive new range of A-level subjects including global perspectives, criminology, applied medical sciences and performing arts.

“The new sixth form building is another step forward in our mission to continually build upon the already excellent standards and facilities here at Kings Monkton,” added Paul Norton, the school’s principal. “As a school, we will always strive to lead from the front, pioneering new curriculums and creative, immersive teaching methods. This, combined with our dedication to make sure our pupils are always receiving a first-class education. We look forward to welcoming a new cohort of A-level pupils to our school this September.”
