Alderley Edge School for Girls named Apple Distinguished School
The institution is being recognised for its innovative technology use to enhance learning
Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is delighted to announce that it has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for 2018–2021. This is a key milestone for the school’s Technology Enhanced Learning Strategy which began in 2014.
Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching and the school environment, and have documented results of academic accomplishment.
The school has been working on implementing a strategy of Technology Enhanced Learning and the accreditation follows the successful launch of a fully implemented iPad ‘one-to-one’ (1:1) programme across all subject areas in the Senior School. One of the school’s aims is to focus on providing pupils and teachers with the most dynamic, flexible and facilitating-learning environment possible and the implementation of the strategy has allowed the school to redesign learning in ways that were simply not possible before.
Use of the iPad provides a personalised, innovative and constantly iterative way for memorable lessons to be delivered to girls, with custom-designed digital resources replacing traditional textbooks. Students use the camera to capture and reflect on learning in the moment, collaborate and make their learning visible by displaying their work through Apple TVs, and engage in more effective assessment and feedback with their teacher to support their individualised learning pathway. Students have much greater choice over how they record, develop and communicate their ideas and the iPad provides instant access to a world of information which teachers utilise to deliver dynamic and engaging lessons. Students develop into autonomous researchers and independent thinkers.
Implementing the 1:1 programme has helped the school to provide a unique and innovative learning experience to all of its children; Technology Enhanced Learning actually begins in the Junior School where class sets of iPads are provided for students to use throughout the school day, helping to prepare the school’s youngest minds for tomorrow’s world and allowing them to access new and innovative technologies.
AESG is proud of its progress and continues to strive for the best learning outcomes for its pupils. Parents fully support their initiatives and understand the importance of using the technology in the classroom.
Headmistress Helen Jeys commented: “The selection of Alderley Edge School for Girls as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and inspiring learning environment.
“Our vision is to create independent, digitally-literate learners through teaching experiences which are relevant, personalised, inspiring and memorable and as a school, we are working hard to establish ourselves as an internationally recognised centre of technological teaching excellence. We were also delighted to receive a national award from the Independent Schools Association in November 2018 for Academic Excellence and Innovation.”
Jamie Chadwick, director of technology enhanced learning, added: “Apple technology supports our vision of innovation, creativity and collaboration. Becoming an Apple Distinguished School gives us a unique opportunity to share our passion for technology-enhanced learning and forms the bedrock of the next phase of our technology strategy.”
