Alesha Dixon to judge Explore Learning Writers’ Awards
The free writing competition, for children aged four to 14, launches next month
Children’s author, TV presenter and singer, Alesha Dixon, has been named this year’s judge of the Explore Learning Writers’ Awards. The competition, now in its 11th year, encourages children from across the UK to fire their imaginations by writing a 500-word story, with the winner receiving a family trip to Disneyland Paris, a visit from Dixon, and £500 worth of books for their school library.
Previous competition themes have included ‘heroes’, ‘the future’ and ‘around the world’; this year’s will be announced when the competition opens.
Alesha Dixon first found fame as part of the Brit-nominated and MOBO Award-winning group, Mis-teeq, before going on to become a platinum selling solo artist in her own right. Dixon’s appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 led to her winning the series and becoming a judge for three seasons. Since then she has presented and hosted many TV shows, including: Alesha’s Street Dance Stars, Children In Need, Sport Relief, Your Face Sounds Familiar, and Dance, Dance, Dance. She recently announced her departure as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, is set to presenter a new BBC show, The Greatest Dancer.
Dixon has written two children’s books about a girl with superhero powers, Aurora Beam: Lightning Girl (launched in April 2018) and Lightning Girl 2: Superhero Squad (September 2018). A third instalment is set to be released in March.
Throughout the next six months, Explore Learning will be providing writing tips from their creative writing team, previous winners, judges, and best-selling authors. The English and maths tuition company will also host free downloadable information on its website, as well as run free workshops with local libraries, schools and community groups.
Closing date for competition entries is Sunday 5th May.
