April showers herald new era of art at King's

Building work has begun on a new art studio for King's College Taunton

Posted by Stephanie Broad | April 28, 2016 | Facilities & buildings

On 15 April, under an April shower or two, Headmaster Richard Biggs dug out the first piece of the foundations for the new Silvermead Studio. Also attending the ceremony were members of King’s staff, Rachel Price from Ward Williams Associates and Jon Webster from builders Qube Construction.

The new studio is an exciting addition to the school's existing art facilities, creating a large new teaching and working space. With high ceilings and plenty of natural light, the new studio will provide an opportunity for pupils to work on large-scale and collaborative projects. The design includes a mezzanine floor and large glass doors opening onto a terrace. The new studio will allow the development of the smaller spaces in the current building into more dedicated, specialist working areas for pupils.

Building has started on site

Commenting on the project, Head of Art Clare Schmidt said: It is very exciting to see the diggers starting work on the art extension. The new studio is going to be such a great addition the open and light space will provide the opportunity for our pupils to create ambitious drawing, painting and textile work.

To celebrate the building of the new studio, the school has created the Silvermead Scholarship, offering 50% off day fees to outstanding artists entering the third form (year nine) from September 2017.

The new studio is expected to be completed in time for the start of the new academic year in September.
