Barnard Castle opens purpose-built science lab

Prep school opens their new science facility ahead of two new classrooms which are also due to be completed

Barnard Castle’s new science block has state-of-the-art facilities that will enable dedicated science teachers to provide children with an insight into the chemical, biological and physical elements of science that go beyond the current curriculum.

The science garden, which is still under construction, will provide a sensory garden - a woodland habitat where the children can carry out their own research and an area for the ultimate ‘big bang’ explosions to take place safely.

The exposure to science that the children will now have would not usually be accessible until the children reach senior school age. It is therefore an exciting development for the senior school teachers who anticipate being able to start their teaching at a much higher level than was previously possible.

The school has seen an exciting few months of development. This month, both ends of the school will have completed their next stage of development and the prep school will boast four more classrooms. The senior school are also looking forward to a new sixth form centre.

Headmistress Mrs Laura Turner said: “This is a fantastic addition to the school, allowing children from a young age to experience science at a new level in a specialised facility. Children are naturally curious and we have created an inspired environment for children to learn and develop their curiosity further in a fun and exciting way.”
