Waste warrior Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall sent a message of support to Dauntsey’s pupil society ‘The Big Green Thing’ in the run up to their ‘Big Green Day’. As part of the School’s Fifth Form Complementary Curriculum, the society organised a day of talks and workshops covering a diverse range of topics including a sustainable approach to waste management, vulture conservation and corporate responsibility.

Speakers included:

  • Malaby Biogas who operates the Bore Hill Farm Biodigester in Warminster which successfully diverts food waste from landfill, to provide a combined waste disposal and energy generation solution in a clean and highly-efficient process.
  • Miriam Nicholls Education Officer from the local conservation charity, The Hawk Conservancy Trust who gave a fascinating presentation on vultures, explaining how ecologically vital they are.
  • LUSH, a British cosmetics brand, who talked to pupils about its approach to business and its belief in ethical buying, supporting charities and actively campaigning on issues from animal testing to the environment.

The day concluded with a workshop for pupils in which a competition was held to see who could construct the most efficient mini wind turbines in the DT department.

James O’Hanlon from Dauntsey’s said: “We were thrilled to receive a message of support from Hugh for our ‘Big Green Day’. Environmental issues are high on our agenda at Dauntsey’s and ‘The Big Green Thing’ society puts a lot of time and effort into creating campaigns which highlight green issues and encourage others to become more aware of their impact on the environment.

“The speakers at ‘A Big Green Day’ were both thought-provoking and entertaining and have given us further impetus to continue to campaign on environmental issues.”
