Buckswood Great Hall hosts this year’s university fair

Brexit is not the end for Buckswood School

Buckswood aims for worldwide higher education

Posted by Stephanie Broad | October 18, 2016 | International

Buckswood School welcomed 22 Universities from Europe and the UK to attend this year’s university fair. The school gave out plenty of friendly, expert advice on everything to do with university life and how to navigate the complex UCAS (University and Colleges Application Service) system.

200 students in the Buckswood Sixth Form, spent a busy afternoon on a ‘speed dating’ circuit, finding out about the types of courses available to study at degree level and what admissions offices are looking for, both here in the UK and further afield.

Head of Buckswood Sixth Form,  Mike Shaw said “Buckswood has been an international school since it was founded in 1933. We have always sought to foster a global awareness in all our students and that means seeking out opportunities worldwide.

“But, that does not result in educating UK and international students and then sending them onto higher education in their home countries. Many of our international students stay on in the UK and attend British universities, with a Buckswood education giving them the necessary edge in higher education and employment arenas. For our UK students, their international education here at Buckswood develops within them the confidence to branch out, and we have waved many of our graduates off to universities and employment in Europe and further afield.”

With future freedom of movement within Europe yet to be decided, you may have thought that interest in international education would have suffered from a decline, with parents being unsure of future legislation and fluctuations in currency. But Buckswood says that its numbers are at a record high, which the school attributes to its long-held reputation for placing students at the top universities.

Headmaster Giles Sutton said that the combination of quality academic tuition and a diverse range of life experiences is a winning formula with universities.

“At Buckswood, we help every student to secure places on the right courses at the right universities for them and their future career plans. We have a track record over a decade long of strong A Level and UFC results, we have been running the International Baccalaureate now for five years and have celebrated a 100% pass rate and doubling numbers year on year. Our focus is on outcomes and the Buckswood Sixth Form delivers” he said.

With rising travel and tuition costs in the UK, the savvy student is shopping around to find the best deal when it comes to university and Sixth Form. According to the ‘Complete University Guide,’ a study under taken by HSBC in October 2014, found that taking into account two return flights a year, a student would pay just £100 more per year to study in Canada compared with the UK, where average costs were calculated to work out at £15,600 taking into account tuition fees, living expenses and accommodation. The HSBC study found Germany to be the least expensive study destination, putting costs at just over £4,200 per year, with France next, with an annual cost of about £5,300.

Buckswood Sixth Form offers fixed fees starting from £2,000 a term and the School will be holding a Sixth Form information evening on the 19th of October between 6 – 8 p.m. in the School’s Great Hall with information on A Level and IB pathways.
