Christ College pupil wins prestigious hockey award

Beth Wood has risen from junior level to being selected for the Wales senior women’s squad

Promising Christ College first XI player, Beth Wood, has won a prestigious Hockey Writers’ Club National Youth Award for her contributions to hockey, including school, club and country.

Wood, who joined the college from Brecon High School in September 2017, played a key part in the under-18 side that retained the Welsh National Championship title in March. She is also the current first team’s top scorer, with an incredible 24 goals in 10 matches (a school record).

Wood also plays for one of Wales’ leading club sides, Cardiff Met Hockey Club, and has been a core member of the Wales under-18 girls’ team for a number of years. She was recently selected for the Wales senior women’s squad for a test series against Scotland, becoming the first Christ College girl to achieve the honour.

Dominic Phelps, head of hockey at the school, said: “Beth’s achievement is more than well-deserved, and Christ College is certainly grateful to have an athlete of her calibre as part of its flourishing hockey programme.”
