Tanveer with her award

Coeliac project wins Derby student BNF award

Derby High School student's project about Coeliac Disease in children helps her scoop a national award

Derby student Tanveer Sangra was recently awarded by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) for scoring the highest marks in the country for her GCSE Home Economics Food and Nutrition coursework.

The 16 year-old from Derby achieved an A* in her Home Economics and Food Nutrition GCSE, with 60% of the marks being awarded for her coursework.

Tanveer, who is studying A-levels in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Home Economics, was invited to the Royal College of Physicians in London to collect her award from the BNF.

She said: “Our head teacher, Mrs Gould, told me that I had won the award and I couldn’t believe it, I was really shocked. I didn’t even realise that you could win an award for something like this.

“I have a lot of allergies, although I’m not Coeliac, but it really interests me so that’s why I chose to research it for my coursework.

“I had an amazing time in London when I collected my award. There was a dinner and I was sat on a table with people from the food industry and it was great to talk to them and make some contacts.

“I’m really interested in Food Science and it is something that I might like to pursue in the future.”

Catryn McDonald, Head of Home Economics at Derby High School, was extremely proud of Tanveer: “I knew she had done really well with her coursework as she gained full marks for that section, but to have the highest mark in the country overall, is really outstanding.

“She has a natural interest and curiosity about the subject of nutrition and will certainly excel should she choose that as her career path. We had a fantastic day down in London at the British Nutrition Foundation Annual Day and she has made lots of very useful contacts.
