Derby High School puts on classic festive performance

Lower School pupils staged a production of the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol

Derby High School students have embraced the festive spirit with a Lower School production of A Christmas Carol.

Student Olivia Carroll-Walsh, who is also a member of Nottingham Operatic Society and the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group, said she was delighted to be playing the role of Scrooge.

The 12-year-old said: “At the auditions we were all asked to read a part from the script. I really didn’t mind which part I had. An email was sent out with a list of the main characters on it and I saw that I’d been given the part of Scrooge. I was very happy but a bit nervous.

“The parts were handed out before the summer so when we came back in September we started rehearsals on Wednesdays and Fridays. We had about four or five weeks of rehearsals and we also had a technical rehearsal. We were involved in all aspects of the show from the backstage make-up and hair to the lights and acting.

“I love acting. I was invited by the National Youth Music Theatre to be part of a two-week residential summer school in Plymouth in August 2017 and then I performed on stage at The Barbican in Plymouth. I would love to perform on the West End or Broadway one day.”
