Ardingly College has become the first organisation in Mid Sussex to be presented with an Eat Out, Eat Well gold award for providing a wide choice of healthy meals.

The Eat Out, Eat Well scheme has been developed to encourage catering establishments, including restaurants, cafes, public houses, staff canteens and school kitchens to offer healthier menu options. The scheme was launched in February 2014 across Sussex to promote healthy and nutritious meal options for people who are eating out, buying a takeaway or having lunch at work.
Mid Sussex District Council is taking part in the scheme, which is open to every food business that caters for the public and will be assessed and managed in Mid Sussex by the council’s food hygiene inspectors.

The executive chef and deputy catering manager at Ardingly College have both achieved a level two certificate in ‘Healthier Food and Special Diets’ from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. The school provides at least one healthy option at every mealtime, as well as providing fresh fruit and water for healthy snacks during the day.
A representative from Ardingly College said: “Ardingly College catering department is delighted to be the first recipient of this gold award for the Eat Out, Eat Well Award. ‘Dining at Ardingly’ work tirelessly to ensure the food that is provided is nutritionally balanced and reduced in sugar and salt. As well as constantly reviewing cooking methods and recipes, the department also provides detailed allergy information as well as nutritional information to help customers with food allergies and people with conditions such as diabetes to make the right menu choices.”

Award-winning catering businesses are able to display the Eat Out, Eat Well logo on their premises to promote their business and help customers to make healthier choices when eating out. The awards are also published online at www.eatouteatwell.org. “Eat Out, Eat Well has proved to be a great success in other areas and we are confident it will prove popular in Mid Sussex too,” said councillor Christopher Snowling, Mid Sussex District Council cabinet member for health and community. “By encouraging restaurants, cafes and canteens to provide nutritious options, we are giving people the chance to make a healthy choice when they want to.”
