Is the ‘workplace perks’ fad over?
Study from job site CV Library reveals education professionals would prefer more money to employee benefits
A new study from job site CV-Library has revealed that education professionals are the least likely to receive workplace perks when compared with all other sectors.
The research was conducted amongst over 2,400 UK professionals to determine how UK workers feel about employee benefits.
Survey findings reveal:
- Only 14.3% of education professionals receive perks at work, much lower than the national average of 24.3%
- The majority (84.6%) of industry workers believe businesses should offer workplace perks
- More holiday ranks top on the list of favourite perks among education professionals
1. More holiday – 21.5%
2. Free food – 20.5%
3. Money savers (e.g. gym membership) – 20.5%
- Almost half (44.9%) of education workers would feel happier if their employer offered more perks
Despite being excited about workplace perks, when asked to choose between perks at work and a pay rise, 80.8% of education workers would opt for the money, especially in the post-Christmas months when money is notoriously tight. Furthermore, almost half (49.4%) of sector professionals don’t believe workplace perks are important when considering new career opportunities.

However, it’s important that perks aren’t used as a replacement for fair salaries and bonus schemes, especially if you’re bringing staff on-board in January, when many employees experience a funding-drought after the Christmas period. Education professionals have revealed that higher salaries and bonuses are more important than workplace perks, and education organisations need to take this into consideration when recruiting for their vacancies.”
