Murderous assignment for Derby High School students

Author Robin Stevens guided pupils through the process of writing a murder mystery during an 'inspirational' talk

Robin Stevens, author of The Guggenheim Mystery, took students through the different stages of writing a murder mystery and helped them to come up with their own plot before urging them to “keep writing'.

The writer, who is also responsible for the critically-acclaimed and award-winning Murder Most Unladylike series, talked to students from Years 5, 6 and 7 at Derby High School along with visiting students from Bemrose School, Littleover School and St Peter’s C of E Junior School.

She said: “There’s something special about mystery stories, they are so adventurous and exciting and I love solving the puzzle and trying to work ahead of the detective. There’s always a cliff-hanger at the end of every chapter and they are so gripping, there’s always lots of danger and peril. You always want to find out what happens next and it’s so hard to put a mystery story down.”

Sue Bussey, Library Resources Manager, said: “I hadn’t read any of her books until my young friends in our Primary challenged me to read some of the Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries. I became an instant fan.

“Robin guided her audience through the process of writing a murder mystery and they came up with ideas for their very own ‘Murder in a Prison'. Our students and visitors loved the morning visit and were still buzzing about it when they went home.”
