UCAS data shows clearing was 'busiest ever' as 474,710 people placed into full time higher education

As of 23 August, 474,710 people have been placed in full-time UK higher education through UCAS – an increase of two per cent from last year.

Of the total, 38,250 people have been accepted through Clearing – up 10% from 2015. 

London South Bank University (LSBU)’s Clearing centre, one of the largest in the country, a 24-hour, round the clock service was open for calls. In the first 24 hours, they received over 5,000 calls and 1,400 applications.

Naz Hussain, Head of Marketing at LSBU, said: “We were braced for a slower start this year given the increased number of places and universities in Clearing this year.  

“Early indications suggest however that students are being canny and heeding calls to make sure that they choose the course and university that they feel is right for them academically, and are not being unduly swayed by reduced grade offers and promotional gimmicks.”
