Headmaster Simon Smith is aiming to inspire the next generation of leaders’ as part of a curriculum initiative at Rydal Penrhos.

The school have announced that the ‘RPL’ Course will be implemented from September and is a tangible part of Rydal Penrhos’ new five Ls philosophy of Learning, Living, Leading, Listening and Location.

The course, which will be taught one period per week to all Year 7 pupils, will cover a variety of topics designed to help develop the pupils’ EQ and prepare them for the challenges of school, university and future working life.

It will have two distinct units. The first helping pupils’ develop their resilience and support their well-being by covering topics such as mindfulness, mental first-aid, self-efficacy, developing a growth mindset, community mindedness and how to sustain positive relationships with each other.

The second strand, taught by the Headmaster, will explore all aspects of leadership in a variety of contexts including business, politics, sport, communities and the workplace. It will involve the study of past and present leaders whilst looking at case studies to help the pupils understand what it means to lead effectively.

Simon said: “I am particularly excited by this new and innovative development of delivering a course that is detached from any form of examination and assessment criteria. Instead the lessons will be stimulating, enjoyable, challenging and comforting in equal measure. This is a key part of building up a pupil body who can deal confidently and calmly with the challenges of the 21st century.”

This is the latest in a number of exciting academic changes at Rydal Penrhos, with the school also, for example, introducing Spanish and Psychology from September 2017.
