In the latest issue of Independent Education Today we are talking STEAM and speaking to a photographer whose experience in independent education gave her the freedom she needed to succeed
We have put together a fantastic issue to kick off 2019, with what I must admit is one of my favourite covers so far.
After leaving Putney High School Anita Corbin embarked upon her professional career as a photographer. She recently returned to the school for an exciting project that had her taking photographs of other successful Putney alumnae. The photographs are simply beautiful, as you will see, while our cover image was taken by the winner of Anita’s very own photography competition. Turn to page 60 to find out all about it.
She also shares her experiences in independent education. “That thing of allowing us to be a little bit rebellious was really important,” Anita said. While there was discipline, she explains, the school allowed pupils to develop their own characters, even if it led to mistakes.
Isn’t that what we are all striving to achieve in the education sector? Guiding pupils through the maze of the 21st century, with its twists and turns, while giving them the freedom to decide who they want to be.
Anita’s interview also ties in nicely with the theme of this issue – STEAM education. It was Shaun Fenton, Head of Reigate Grammar School and Chair of HMC, who recently said: “The creative industries are crucial for our economy, more so in a world of AI and big data where our distinct human creativity will be ever-more important.” Keri Beckingham has written a feature on the topic on page 19 exploring the current state of the arts in independent education, which is well worth a read.
