Unveiling of Malvern St James school ‘founder’s garden’ sees its patchwork past unified in colourful and commemorative style

Last month, the school held the opening ceremony of its Founders’ Garden, commemorating the five founding schools which make up today’s Malvern St James Girls’ School.
The garden’s centrepiece is a birdbath, created by sculptor Ben Twiston-Davies, and was unveiled at Batsford House, MSJ’s Junior Boarding House on Avenue Road.
The birdbath symbolises the School’s roots in Lawnside, The Abbey, St James’s School, St James’s and The Abbey, and Malvern Girls’ College, while the surrounding plants incorporate colours from each of these founding schools.
Over 150 Old Girls, some of whom had travelled from as far afield as Japan and Hong Kong, attended the opening. They stood alongside current and former staff, in addition to previous heads of the founding schools. The unveiling ceremony was led by Anne Borrowdale, Chair of Governors for MSJ, herself an Old Girl.
After the unveiling, guests enjoyed a cream tea, accompanied by music from current students at the school.
