A new home away from home at Rugby School

Stepnell have been appointed to build a new boarding house at Rugby School which will be energy-efficient and provide bedrooms for 60 students

Contractor Stepnell has been appointed by Rugby School for a £5.5m construction contract to build a new boarding house.

The energy-efficient three-storey building at the boarding school’s Collingwood Centre site, will provide high-end en suite study bedrooms for 60 students as well as communal rooms and accommodation for the housemaster, assistant housemaster and matron.Designed by GSSArchitecture, it will feature a double-height atrium as well as a roof terrace at first-floor level.

Headmaster Peter Green helped officially celebrate the start of work at a ground-breaking ceremony in November. Drawing on their extensive experience of creating exceptional buildings for the independent education sector, the Stepnell team is scheduled to complete the new building in early 2019. The project is the first element of a major refurbishment programme by which the school will invest in the improvement of all its existing boarding house buildings.

Judith Robinson, Rugby School Estates Manager, said, “It is incredibly exciting to finally be starting on site with the new boarding house after all the work and planning that has gone before. GSS has designed a stunning building that is fitting for Rugby School’s first purpose-built boarding house for more than 70 years, and it is very special that it will be built by local firm Stepnell.”

Stepnell Construction Director, Bill Haynes, added, “We are extremely pleased to be working with Rugby School once again through this latest project, delivering high-quality, beautifully-designed contemporary accommodation for students and staff. A crucial focus for our experienced construction team will be careful scheduling and close liaison with the school to ensure that the construction programme causes the minimum of disruption to the surrounding school site, which will remain occupied during the work.”

Previous schemes delivered by Stepnell for Rugby School include the refurbishment of the science schools and an extension to the sports hall.

GSSArchitecture partner, David Allsop, commented, “We are delighted to have been commissioned as the architects, principal designers, quantity surveyors and project managers for this innovative and exciting project.”

“The new boarding house will be the first purpose-built new boarding house at Rugby School since 1938 and an emphasis has been placed on creating high-quality spaces using robust, long-lasting materials to encapsulate the changing needs in society. This will offer one of the first fully single room en suite facilities for all ages assisting students’ private study as well as preparing them for university life.”

The new boarding house building will incorporate the use of advanced off-site manufactured en suite bathroom pods which offer superb quality and reduced construction times. In addition, it features carbon-saving green technology, including energy-efficient boilers and solar photovoltaic panels.
