Abingdon’s rugby rivals

Two Abingdon sixth-formers took part in the recent Scotland v England u18 rugby match on opposing sides

Abingdon School sixth-former Michael Dewar is usually a teammate of Theo Brophy Clews, but that wasn’t the case when he was called up to his national side, Scotland, to play in the u18 rugby international against England on 8 March. Nor was he to see victory for his team. Theo captained the English squad and led them to a 39-27 victory on the day. Theo also scored and was awarded Man of the Match.

Theo is the first ever Abingdon School boy to captain England against Scotland at u18 level. He said: “It is a unique feeling to play for England and it was a privilege to captain the side as I was amongst a number of people who could have done it.”

Michael, who was making his international debut, starting at openside for Scotland, commented: “There is a friendly rivalry between us but on the day there was definitely a serious edge.”
