Bolton School Boys’ pupil shortlisted for Saatchi Art Prize

The artwork is just one of 20 which has been shortlisted for The Saatchi Gallery Art Prize for Schools 2017

A piece of artwork by Bolton School Boys’ Division Year 12 student Adam Hall has been shortlisted for The Saatchi Gallery Art Prize for Schools 2017. He was encouraged to enter the competition by Mrs Ryder, the Bolton School Boys’ Division Coordinator for A Level Art. Adam’s piece is one of just 20 artworks to have been shortlisted from over 24,000 entries from 66 different countries.

Adam’s installation, which is titled ‘Bolton School: A Modern Tradition’, was created as part of his AS Art and Design coursework. It is part of a larger project with the theme of architecture, which represents three months of work across the year but in reality was much more.

The piece is based on Adam’s interpretation of Bolton School. In his explanation for The Saatchi Gallery website, he wrote about the “success of blending innovation with tradition” at the school and said: “My work displays this juxtaposition between the old and new. Initially, you are greeted with the grand façade: the clock tower and main arch… Enter through the piece however and an explosion resonates modern complexity. Old chairs and desks speak of the thousands of past students that once worked at them. As a whole, the work is a celebration of Bolton School, for indeed it is timeless, but also speaks of its time and place.”

‘Bolton School: A Modern Tradition’ is currently being transported to London for the Saatchi Gallery Art Prize for Schools 2017 Exhibition. The Awards Evening, at which the primary and secondary winners and overall winner will be announced, will take place on 4 July. The exhibition will be open to the public from 5 to 13 July.

The installation can also be viewed in 360 degree virtual reality on CoSpaces’ website.
