Brentwood checkmate chess rivals

Brentwood Prep’€™s Under-11 chess team took gold in the regional heat of the National Primary Schools’€™ Chess Team Championship

The six-player team took top honours in the zonal round of the competition that was held in Colchester last weekend. They will now go on to represent the Prep in the semi-finals at Camber Sands, Sussex, in June – the third year running the School has progressed to this stage.

The three-round championship, which is in its 45th year, is an annual event organised by the English Primary Schools’ Chess Association and is open to any school in England, Scotland, Wales or Gibraltar with pupils aged five to 11 years.

The winning Prep team – made up of five players and a playing reserve – played five rounds of chess during the day and all players competed in each round. There were 12 teams in the Under 11 section and Brentwood scored 20 from a possible 25 points, a creditable 3½ points ahead of their nearest rival, R A Butler School from Saffron Walden.

After the semi-finals, the best teams in the country will meet in the two-day final in July.Brentwood’s team was: Nihaal Sandhu, Alexander Chaban, Bemi Thompson, Alex Watkins, Abhay Uppal, Austin Cooper.
