The World Finals of the Kids’ Lit Quiz were held on the 8th July 2014, in Falmouth, Cornwall. City girls Ailish Coleman, Hannah Hains, Clem Sagar Scott and Annie Roberts recaptured the World Champion’s title in this prestigious competition – something that has only ever been done once before. City last held the world title in 2010.
The final scores were:
1. UK – City of London School for Girls (35 points)
2. Australia – Canberra Grammar School (33 points)
3. New Zealand – Awakeri School, the Bay of Plenty (28 points)
The competition was a hard fought one, with Australia dominating early on. However, the City girls were in third place at the halfway interval and slowly built their scores to eventually take the title. The competition consisted of ten rounds, with seven questions in each round. Two points were awarded for a correct answer and one point was deducted for an incorrect answer. The ten categories were:
1. Movies
2. Anti heroes
3. Authors
4. Closures – the final lines of a book
5. Illustrators
6. Mythical beasts
7. Non-fiction
8. Nursery rhymes
9. Titles
10. Toys in literature
The girls came into their own with their knowledge of authors and closures – and some excellent detailed knowledge of titles of books (identified from obscure details and quotations) helped them lift the title.
