Design success for Portland Place School

A team of budding designers from the school have been entered into the final of an international competition

A group of determined Year 10 students battled it out amongst over 14,500 entrants from all over the world in the Design Ventura competition. The successful team was selected as one of only three schools to enter into the final, alongside a second team from the UK and one from New Zealand.

The qualifying pupils were commended as finalists with their product, ‘Astro Caps’, a set of fun, space-themed pencil toppers which were created to teach younger students about the solar system.

Entering into the penultimate round, the designers meticulously prepared a three-minute video pitch discussing their innovative product to present to a panel of judges.

Headmaster David Bradbury commented: “At Portland Place School we encourage our pupils to develop and express their creativity. Opportunities such as the design competition are a perfect example of how we provide them with the space to do so and encourage the strong balance of academic and creative.”

“We are exceptionally proud of our students for taking part; it was a highly exciting competition with some strong entries from many other schools. The successful team worked hard throughout, a huge congratulation to them.”

Portland Place School is a leading independent co-educational school for children aged 9-18, located directly in the heart of the City of Westminster. It was founded with a particular purpose in mind: to be an alternative to the intense, large, examinations-focused independent day schools of which there are many in London.

The school ethos is to be small, nurturing and relaxed, encouraging and enabling their pupils to achieve their very best academically, with space to develop and express their creativity and athleticism.
