What is a future-proof uniform?

Sponsored: Today, it is more important than ever that your uniform is not only fit for purpose, but meets the evolving requirements of the world around us. Perry delivers uniforms which are sustainable and not defined by gender

Future-proofing a uniform means providing a uniform which reflects the ethos of the school, appeals to your parents and children will be proud to wear for years to come.

Every item in the uniform has a purpose, is good quality and durable enough to feed into a thriving second-hand initiative within the school.

How can Perry help achieve your design vision?

It all starts with a conversation with the senior leadership team to understand the inspiration behind the wish to make a change. Then a visit to the school and some initial ideas to hone down to two or three looks that reflect the brief and are heading in the right direction.

Bringing the school community with you is an important part of the process; the Perry Team, work with you to elicit parent and pupil views to ensure that they are incorporated in the new uniform. Working with a select committee, Perry presents the ideas to reach the final look.

Recently we have been working with several schools to introduce a new uniform, some new schools and others looking to refresh the image of their school who are delighted with the end results. But don’t just take our word for it; we spoke to Alison Melrose, head at Prince’s Gardens Prep School, about her experience creating a uniform with Perry for her new school which recently celebrated its first birthday.

It was wonderful to work with Caroline and Louise from Perry and benefit from their years of experience designing uniforms for schools, universities and top-level sports teams.

From the initial concepts to the final designs, we worked together to ensure that the fabrics and styles worked for the children at different ages and for a range of different activities. From the fantastic bright green waterproofs, for our outdoor learning programme, to the smart green tweed and velvet blazers (with the amazing tree printed lining), the uniform is both smart yet practical at the same time.

The sports staff love the games kit, the branded base layers provide lots of options and the fleece lined jackets are ideal for the winter.

Our parents really like the uniform, particularly the blazers, the smart winter overcoats and the pretty summer dresses with the bespoke tree pattern and we look forward to having some matching scrunchies very soon! – Alison Melrose, head, Prince’s Gardens Prep School

In September 2021, Thomas’s opened a senior school in central London with a strong brand identity in place. The brief was to develop a senior uniform that reflected the history of the school and was distinctive yet understated.

As you can see, we achieved their objectives.

The design process for the Thomas’s senior school uniform has been an exciting experience. Perry worked very hard to deliver our ideas on time and presented them beautifully – Kate Thomas, marketing director, Thomas’s London Day Schools

Thank you so much for an amazing job as [the uniform] seems to me to work on each and every one of [the pupils] and the sport kits is exceptional also. A remarkable achievement. Thank you. – Tobyn Thomas, principal, Thomas’s London Day Schools

What can a school expect from Perry?

It is our objective to look after your parents, so they don’t need to speak to the school about uniform. They place an order, we deliver, everything fits and has name tapes sewn-in. It works.

The team at Perry Uniform have been incredibly proactive in communicating with us and with our parents during this challenging year. The online resource is excellent, allowing parents to make the right choice first time and so minimizing returns. We have been hugely appreciative of the ongoing relationship we have with our partners at Perry – John Green, head, Seaford College

Delivering inclusive uniforms with no barriers

Perry’s own UK-based manufacturing unit means that we go that extra mile to deliver uniform that meets everyone’s needs, from internal pockets added for a child who needs to self-medicate to a backless blazer for a child in a wheelchair.

My son is vegan and has asked if he can have a school blazer that does not contain wool… That’s fantastic news! I really do appreciate the time and effort and care that you have taken over this, it’s very impressive and much appreciated!” Gosh your service just gets better and better!!! This is wonderful… Many thanks indeed! – Parent, Haileybury
