Millfield Prep School’s under-13 girls’ cricket team returned victorious from a memorable trip to Lord’s for the Indoor National Championship Finals.
Of the thousand teams that originally entered the competition, just a handful remained to fight for the title at the home of cricket.
Following two wins and a defeat, Millfield Prep’s last match in the round-robin climax was essentially a final: trailing by three points, but boasting a better run rate, victory would see the Somerset side crowned champions.
Having hit a handy 97 runs with the bat, Millfield’s controlled bowling saw them knock over their opponents with 13 runs to spare.
“This is an amazing group of girls that we knew at the start of the year were capable of achieving something incredible,” said Dave Beal, celebrating a hat trick of national titles since first being appointed director of cricket at the school in 1999.
“They have had to work hard, and the trophy is a result of their hunger and determination to be the best they can, which is national champions.”
Besides their matches, the girls were also able to enjoy a guided tour of the hallowed ground – including the England home dressing room – just a week before Lord’s witnessed the men’s Test team usher in the Brendon McCullum/Ben Stokes era with a nail-biting win over New Zealand.
