Redmaids’ pupil called up to national netball squad

Neve Marsden will join the England Netball Roses Academy after impressing observers during a two-day selection camp

A Redmaids’ High pupil has been called up to the England Netball Roses Academy 2022 – 2023 squad.

Neve Marsden’s invitation to join the national pathway means that she will travel to Loughborough for regular training camps, take part in friendly competitions, and have the opportunity to represent her country in a European netball under-17 tournament in early 2023.

Having caught the eye of observers while playing goal shooter/goal attack for Severn Stars in the U17 National Performance League, Neve was among 45 players invited to a two-day selection camp.

Twenty-five attendees made the final cut.

“The standard of young players in this country increases each year and it was great to see this on show at our camp,” said Roses Academy head coach, Sheonah Forbes.

“I’m really looking forward to working with this group and supporting their individual development, both on and off the court, with their respective clubs.”

She is an incredibly talented athlete, and we can’t wait to see what she will achieve – Redmaids’ director of sport, Claire Maggs

Neve, who was on holiday when an email confirming her selection arrived, professed herself “delighted” at the news.

“I feel very excited and proud as it will be a great experience and I’ve been training hard and challenging myself over the past few months to make sure I was ready,” she added. “I’m so happy the hard work has paid off.

“I can’t wait to work on different aspects of my game and improve whilst meeting lots of amazing athletes who also love netball.”

Claire Maggs, director of sport at Redmaids’ High, was “thrilled” with Neve’s selection for the national academy.

“It has been such a privilege to watch her discover her passion for netball and develop as a player through her time at Redmaids’ High,” she said.

“She is an incredibly talented athlete, and we can’t wait to see what she will achieve through her time with the Roses Academy.”

Neve’s news follows the June announcement that Kellie Hull, a sports coach at the same Bristol school, had been called up to the first ever mixed England netball squad.
