Brighton prep students leap ahead

Brighton College bring home eight medals from National Prep Schools Athletics Championships

Posted by Stephanie Broad | August 05, 2016 | Sports & Leisure

Brighton College, recently took 14 children to the Nationals Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium on 4 July, returning with eight medals.

The National Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships has run since 1976 and has been held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham for 25 years.

Brighton students achieved two gold medals in javelin, three silver medals in javelin, one silver medal in hurdles and one in discus, as well as a bronze medal for the long jump.

Every year over 200 schools, mainly represented by the Independent Association for Prep Schools (IAPS) compete in a large range of track and field disciplines in three age groups (U12, U13, and U14). Boys and girls have their own separate events. There are 12 regional qualifying rounds and athletes qualify if they win or come second (with a qualifying standard) at their regional meeting.

Harry Hastings, headmaster of the prep school at Brighton College, said: “Athletics is very much on the up at Brighton College; at Sports Day every child did at least six events and every performance counted to the house total! All our pupils have worked hard this season (we run a weekly club during the winter too) and to get national rewards is a testament to all their purposeful practice throughout the year. I couldn’t be more proud of our eight medals.
