Professor Alexis Jay to lead child abuse inquiry following resignation of Justice Goddard

Hon. Dame Lowell Goddard DNZM has resigned as Chair of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). 

In a statement on the IICSA website, the Inquiry confirmed that the work will continue ‘without delay’. 

“Investigations, research activity and Truth Project private sessions will continue as planned, and victims and survivors are encouraged to continue coming forward,” said the statement.

“Those victims and survivors who have already chosen to share their experiences with us continue to make a valuable contribution to our work, which will be carried on as the Inquiry moves forward.” 

The Inquiry was set up in 2014 to examine the extent to which institutions and organisations in England and Wales have taken seriously their responsibility to protect children. One stream of investigation looks at residential schools. 

Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, has appointed Professor Alexis Jay as the new chair of the inquiry. Jay was already on the inquiry’s top panel and previously led the Rotherham abuse inquiry.
