Wolverhampton Grammar School (WGS) has announced a significant expansion of its junior school.
Classes for pupils in reception, year one and year two will be incorporated into the school from the start of the coming academic year.
The new provision means that WGS will become an all-through school, catering to children and young people age four to 18.
Approval from the Department for Education to expand the age range of the school followed a comprehensive review by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
“We are so excited that children will now be able to join us at the very start of their educational journey,” said Dan Peters, head of Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School.
“Opening our doors to children in reception, year one and year two from September means that we can ensure our pupils make the very best progress from the word go.”

WGS’ new intake will be taught in remodelled classrooms, including an inside-outside learning space, together with a dedicated infants’ playground.
“We are delighted to have been given the approval by the Department for Education to expand our education provision to children aged 4-18,” said James Sage, chairman of the school’s board of directors.
“High quality teaching, devoted staff, small class sizes and our caring ethos in the junior school allow our young children the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.”
WGS is among the oldest schools in the country, having celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2012. It was founded by Sir Stephen Jenyns, a local wool merchant who rose to become Lord Mayor of London by the time of Henry VIII’s coronation. It has stood on its present site on Compton Road since 1875 and became co-educational in 1992.
