Exeter School offers funded places to local children

Six fully funded places are available to join the sixth form at the Devon independent school, plus a further three for entry into year seven

An independent school in Devon is offering funded places to local children for the fifth consecutive year.

Nine free places are available at Exeter School for the academic year beginning in September 2022.

The opportunity is open to would-be pupils who pass the entrance exams in January, and whose families could not otherwise afford to send their child to the school.

Three full bursaries, called foundation bursaries, are available for entry into year seven, funded via alumni legacies and gifts. A further three free places in Exeter’s sixth form are wholly underwritten by the St John’s Hospital Educational Foundation grant.

Another three funded places in sixth form are conditional upon choice of subject. The George Williams Bursaries will fund two pupils looking to study science, and the Bob Griffin Bursary – commemorating the long-time Exeter headmaster who retired last year – will support a sixth former in the learning of modern foreign languages.

“Exeter School has always provided a significant number of means-tested bursaries at the school for those in need of support, and these will continue to be provided and at the same level as before,” read a statement from the school.

Head Louise Simpson said: “I was not lucky enough to attend an independent school like Exeter School, and have seen the transformative opportunities that such an education can offer.

“We are an inclusive community that welcomes bright and committed young people who can give their talents and skills to better our community, and are willing to take up the challenges and opportunities that we offer.”
