Following on from a Pyjama Readathon where the pupils raised over £1,700 for charity, girls at the Putney-based Falcons School for Girls marked World Book Day with a range of entertaining, educational projects.
Children celebrated stories by dressing up as their favourite book characters for their regular ‘reading huddles’. As part of an ongoing focus to develop pivotal reading skills, pupils gathered together in small groups, found a comfortable space to read and shared their favourite stories.
The colourful day, forming part of an overall scheme, was kicked off by Year 5 leading an assembly on the joy of reading and saw an array of familiar faces from well-known stories, including Little Red Riding Hood, the Worst Witch, Robin Hood and Fantastic Mr Fox.
Younger pupils at the school enjoyed storytelling time with a new mystery reader, a weekly initiative at the school determined to reinforce the importance of reading. In assembly, a host of weekly reading certificates were awarded to pupils who had managed to read to an adult every day for a week.
Ms Laurie, Head of Library commented: “At Falcons School for Girls we motivate our pupils to develop a love of reading, something which is fundamental to building a broader vocabulary and helping to better listening and understanding. For this major focus, we provide the children with a range of opportunities such as reading huddles and weekly objectives, helping them to enhance their learning pathway in a fun environment.
“The girls have had an enjoyable week dressing up, sharing their favourite stories and reading to each other, activities which they will continue with throughout the year.”
