St George’s School for Girls in Edinburgh, has announced the appointment of Alexandra Hems as its next Head. St George’s, founded in 1888 by the pioneers of women’s education in Scotland, is now Scotland’s largest all girls’ school and the only all-through girls’ school in Edinburgh.
Alex Hems will take over the headship from 1 January 2017, immediately following the retirement of Anne Everest, who is retiring from a role she has filled since 2010.
Paul Brewer, Chair of Council at St George’s, said: “We are delighted about appointing such an outstanding candidate and someone who intrinsically understands the qualities of a girls’ school, its strengths and opportunities. St George’s is a wonderful place and we wanted to find someone who will cherish the characteristics that makes St George’s such a good school.
“We look forward to supporting Alex as she takes the school on the next steps of its journey, helping to encourage the development of young women of independent mind, while at the same time leading the school so it continues to be fit for purpose in the modern, and global world we now live in.”
