Loretto student strikes gold

A promising young judo star has proved he has ’ what it takes – by landing a gold medal in a national competition

Thirteen-year-old Loretto pupil, Ben Laidlaw from East Saltoun in East Lothian who is a member of Sportif Judo Club, secured the top spot in the Scottish Judo Ultimate Open which took place at Meadowbank Stadium on Sunday 9 February.

The competition is one of the highlight of the Scottish Judo calendar, attracting around 300 competitors.

Ben, who fought in the Under 46 kg category, won all of his fights to secure first place.

Jonathan Hewat, director of external affairs at Loretto, the East Lothian independent school, commented: “This is a tremendous achievement for Ben and we do congratulate him on his gold medal. He won silver in last year’s competition, so he is certainly one to watch!”
