A Berkshire independent school has welcomed back one of its most famous old boys, Bear Grylls, to open a new centre of scientific and creative learning.
Ludgrove School handed the ribbon-cutting scissors to the adventurer and television presenter when it officially opened its new £2.5m Exploration Centre on 21 June. Although the facility has been fully operational since the start of 2021, social distancing has meant the school had to postpone its official opening until now.
The whole school assembled to hear an address from the Old Ludgrovian – known back then as Edward Michael Grylls – in which he talked about life since leaving Wokingham.
“We are all explorers in life and will face difficult things,” he said. “These three things are what really matter: have courage, be kind and have a ‘never give up’ attitude.”
Ribbon cutting duties dispensed, Grylls was given a tour of the building to see pupils making use of its science, coding, art, CDT and ceramics classrooms.
Work on the Exploration Centre began in the summer of 2019 and was completed in October 2020.
Ludgrove School is a full boarding (fortnightly) boys prep school. It educates 190 boys aged 8 to 13. It was established in North London in 1892 and moved to its home in Wokingham in 1937.
