One of the reasons that I wanted to become a magazine editor was to share people’s stories. Consequently, it was a delight to edit this issue as we focus on the exceptional people in independent schools across the UK.

Take some time to read Mohammed’s story on page 18, as he explains how he left a refugee camp to study at UWC Atlantic College. I promise it will help to put the refugee crisis into perspective. It will also portray how independent schools are keen to help those in need, as UWC Atlantic College is committed to supporting students from conflict and post-conflict societies.

It is also a pleasure to feature John Baugh, Headmaster at the Dragon School, Oxford, on page 24, as he bravely opens his diary and reflects on 30 years as a headteacher. Plus, if you want to find your dancing feet, read Rebecca Curtis’ article on page 58, as she celebrates the power of dance.

Finally, I have noticed that CPD is top of the agenda for many schools so we have a special report on this subject. Steve Wright talks to four schools about how they are developing their staff.
