The next evolution

Rebecca Paddick takes a look at the iZiggi-HD Wireless Document Camera for iPad from IPEVO, the next evolution in affordable doc cam tech

Functionality

Described as ‘the next evolution in affordable doc cam technology’ the iZiggi-HD document camera from IPEVO skips the computer and streams live to iPad via a Wi-Fi connection. Traditional doc cams often need to be connected to a computer via USB, but iZiggi-HD connects wirelessly to iPad to stream live, high resolution images of documents, textbooks, notes and pictures, for teaching and presenting.

Teachers are free to walk amongst students, helping to create an interactive learning environment and one-on-one collaborations that wouldn’t be possible when restricted to a wired computer connection. You can also draw and annotate on the live images using the iPad’s touchscreen, transforming the iPad into an interactive whiteboard when connected to a projection screen.

Ease of use

The base of the doc camera contains the Wi-Fi radio and rechargeable battery, allowing for easy portability. To get started, you simply plug the USB tail into the base of the camera and then connect your iPad to the iZiggi Wi-Fi network. Launch the IPEVO Whiteboard app on your iPad, which is free from the App store, and start viewing what is under the lens.

You can draw and add text directly onto the real-time image stream using the app. A touchscreen toolkit gives you the power to add emphasis, highlight important text passages, and add text boxes to clarify teaching material. The app can also record iZiggi-HD’s live video stream as well as voiceover/audio and any annotation you create. The video file is then saved to your iPad’s Photo Library.

Mobility

The camera’s three articulating joints allow for easy re-positioning and the swiveling head means getting the proper orientation for readable text is just as simple. The camera body features an exposure toggle and an autofocus switch so you can tweak real-time capture. Switch between continuous focus – a ‘set it and forget it’ mode where the camera keeps setting the best focus – and single focus, which is best for static subjects. There are also two USB ports, one for iZiggi-HD’s camera so it can connect wirelessly to a device, and another for any USB storage device.
