During the summer holidays, eight Daunstey’s pupils and one member of staff joined forces with four pupils and a staff member from Marlborough College to undertake an expedition to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
The ascent of Kilimanjaro (5890 metres) itself took six days to complete and, despite some trouble with altitude sickness during the training climb of Mount Meru (4500 metres) early in the trip, everyone acclimatized well and reached the summit for sunrise.
Dauntsey’s staff member Paula Minter said: “It was an amazing experience to climb through each climate zone as we ascended the mountain. Breaking through the clouds to a view of the volcanic landscape and looking back at Mount Meru in the distance was breath-taking.”
Sam Moore, Dauntsey’s Head of Adventure Education said: “Our adventure education curriculum is made up of two elements – High Adventure and Accessible Adventure. The Kilimanjaro expedition falls very much into the former category and the pupils were required to undertake a lot of preparation and organisation before embarking on the trip.
“Partnering with Marlborough College for an expedition was a first for Dauntsey’s and it proved to be a great success with each pupil bringing something unique to the team. Congratulations to everyone for successfully completing this memorable challenge!”
